THE DEVIL'S HIGHWAY runs through the CABEZA PRIETA Conservation Area and the BARRY GOLDWATER GUNNERY RANGE
and was the southern route to California for the 1849er going to the GOLD RUSH in California. Those needing to get there had a choice of this route or following the Gila and Salt River west from Phoenix and while that was wetter...the APACHE made it equally difficult and deadly.
